Deirdre and Alan's Joyful Wedding!

Writer's picture: Anya MarcoAnya Marco

When Deirdre contacted me and explained what she wanted I could not wait to get started! Her bridesmaids each had favourite flowers and Deirdre wanted them to have a bridesmaid bouquet they could keep forever, not only that but she wanted to incorporate their favourite flowers including sunflowers, freesias, tulips, ferns and roses, with each bouquet being completely unique. Read to find out more about her beautiful wedding and to see the flowers.

Tell us about your wedding planning journey …

Alan and I met in Galway city one night we got chatting over a pint and have been talking ever since. We got engaged on a wet windy day on the beach, the waves were crashing and the wind was blowing. No chance of a decent photo. It doesn't sound romantic but it was a huge surprise. I didn't expect it at all!

The Wedding Theme

I didn't have a theme, but there was one thing I knew - I didn't want a white wedding! We wanted it to be bright and colourful. Life is about love, family and friends. The people we invited to the wedding are really important to us and we wanted to reflect the colour, support and joy they bring to us in our day. We really wanted everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed at the wedding. We have a wide range of friends and family and we felt strongly that they should be who they are on the day. I wrote our ceremony with my friend, my husband's sister married us and 5 of our friends picked the readings which we didn't hear or read until the day itself. Four more of our friends played the ceremony music. We really wanted to get everyone involved.

What made you decide to have Felt Flowers as your wedding flowers?

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do regarding the flowers other than I didn't want the wastage that comes with having real flowers. I spotted Felt + Fings, all of the flowers looked so real so I ordered a bunch first for myself. Everyone commented on how colourful and how much they loved the flowers. So I asked my bridesmaids what their favourite flowers were and ordered each bunch according to their tastes. I loved that each bunch was different and represented the personalities of each bridesmaid. While my dress was 1970's vintage, their were 1950's style dresses, each girl had a different hairstyle and their underskirts and shoes were different too. They didn't want to have different dresses so I lost that discussion! The flowers are so well made, they really are perfect. They are also my gift to my bridesmaids. They were thrilled with them. One of my bridemaids then contacted Anya to get a piece done for her hair.

How was your experience working with Felt + Fings?

My experience of working with Anya was simply excellent. I was delighted that Anya was happy to share her creative flair with us. Once I had the the main flowers, she expertly mixed in other flowers/foliage which would complement the bunch. At every stage she sent an email with an update on how the bunches were coming along. Contact with Anya was simple, direct, professional but friendly.

What did your guests/wedding party/photographer think of the flowers?

Our guests and family loved the flowers. Gary our photographer was delighted that the colours were so vivid they really complemented the girls and represented them perfectly.

Doing it Yourself!

We had our wedding in Hotel Doolin in Co. Clare. We were so fortunate to work with some amazingly creative people. When it came to the decoration Louise from Grace Events set the scene perfectly. Our remit was colourful, relaxed, fun! She sourced flowers for the tables - locally and in season. She covered the room with lights, bunting, colour and love.  Both she and the hotel staff were fantastic. We had a buffet which everyone is still talking about because the food was delicious, the venue is an eco venue set in Doolin. While the hotel have a number of wedding packages they are open to tailoring the day the way that you want to. The team working there are professional, efficient and very personable. Our table settings were varied, Louise did a fantastic job decorating them the rest of the things on the table were owned by ourselves. But JK Timeless crafts on Etsy made our fantastic Bosco setting. My dress is a vintage 1970's dress from the wonderful Caroline in Dirty Fabulous. My headpiece is felt made by Olann and my shawl is made by the wonderfully creative Virtue from Emerald and Wax. I wanted to inject some colour to my dress and she made a beautiful orange shawl for me. Lastly I have to say that Tommy form Molten Sky did our wedding video and Gary from Gary McGivney photography captured the day perfectly.

A Piece of Advice

I would recommend to anyone planning a wedding to take your time and trust your gut. In particuluar trust your creative integrity. We were really lucky that everyone we encountered wanted to go with the flow, were open to our ideas and used their creativity to build on and advise on our ideas. We loved having that input.
